The chris murray arena.

Castletown Liam Mellows Coolgreany GAA Club is home to one of the finest indoor Astroturf facilities in the country. The Chris Murray Arena was officially opened on March 14th 2010 next by GAA President Christy Cooney.

The €450,000 project has been open to the public since 2010. There has been a great sense of anticipation in the air when the 200 ft long by 120 ft wide pitch was opened.

Already the facility has proven a huge hit with local sports enthusiasts, as well as players from further afield.

The project received huge support from the local community in Castletown, Coolgreany, Tara Hill and Ballymoney, and also received funding from the National Lottery and the GAA.

The facility can accommodate three smaller playing pitches for underage groups, or can provide one large facility.

With a roof that extends to 30 ft high in the centre, it can accommodate hurling, football, camogie, athletics and many other sports.

The playing surface is the best available and the artificial grass sits on a 20 millimetre shock pad.

The Arena is named after the late Chris Murray, who was a stalwart of the club for many years. Chris, who passed away in recent years, and his four brothers were heavily involved in the club since its foundation. Chris was a former player and committee member. He ran the Tara Vale pub for many years, and was heavily involved in the local community.
